"Tiny Starfish"
Let’s crochet a sweet and simple Starfish together! This teeny-tiny friend is part of my free ocean-inspired micro amigurumi series. She’s super easy to make and full of charm!
Want it extra small? Use one strand of embroidery floss. Prefer something a bit larger? Try fine cotton like iris thread. Dive into the fun!

Material and Tools:

  • Pink embroidery floss (1 separated strand).
  • (I use cotton floss by Gamma or DMC).
  • You can also use very fine sewing thread. The thinner the yarn, the smaller your toy.
  • If you want a slightly bigger or easier-to-crochet version, use Iris or another fine cotton yarn.
  • 0.5 mm crochet hook for floss or 0.75 mm hook for Iris.
  • Fine, strong steel wire (optional).
  • Sharp manicure scissors.
  • Stuffing (polyester fiberfill).
  • Toothpick or similar tool for stuffing small parts.
  • Bright pink watercolor and white acrylic paint.
  • Thin brushes for shading.

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • sc – single crochet
  • inc – increase (2 sc in one stitch)
  • dec – decrease. IMPORTANT! If using floss, skip 1 stitch instead of making a regular decrease — it's much easier.
  • mr – magic ring
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • hdc – half double crochet
Work in a spiral unless otherwise stated.
The total number of stitches in each round is shown in parentheses.
Work with the wrong side facing out for best shaping.

Let’s Begin!

Round 1:
Make a double magic ring, 10 sc into the ring.
Join with a sl st to the first sc. (10)

Round 2:
(Ch 7, starting from 2nd ch from hook, work 6 sc down the chain, then make 2 sc into the next 2 stitches from Round 1) × 5
(You will get 5 arms, with 10 stitches total from Round 1)
Round 3:
(5 sc up the arm, 3 sc into the same stitch at the tip, 5 sc down the arm, then make 2 sc into the stitches from Round 2) × 5
Round 4:
(Work 7 sc, fold the arm in half lengthwise and “seam” it together with 6 sc, then make 2 sc in the next base stitches of Round 3) × 5
(There’s a video tutorial for this step)
Round 5:
10 sc between the arms (10)
Stuff the center of the star and gently stuff the base of each arm.

Now finish the star using one of two methods:

---

Option 1 (easier):

Round 6:
5 dec
Pull the opening tight and sew closed. Hide the yarn tail inside the star.

Option 2 (more advanced):

Round 6:
10 sl st
Pull tight by threading through the slip stitches.
The stitches from Round 5 will add a slight raised texture.
You can enhance this effect by adding more height using a needle and thread around those same stitches.
Finishing touches:
Use pink watercolor to softly shade the edges and center of the star.
Add small white acrylic dots in the center and on the arms for extra cuteness.
All done!
