Step-by-Step Guide: Embroidering a French Knot

If you prefer reading, here is the exact step-by-step algorithm that guarantees flawless results:
  1. The Entry. Bring your needle and working thread up to the right side of your crochet piece at the exact spot where you want the knot to be.
  2. The Tension. Hold the working thread with your free hand (your left hand, if you are right-handed) and keep it slightly taut. Hold the needle parallel to the fabric.
  3. The Wrap. Wrap the taut thread around the tip of the needle 2 or 3 times. The number of wraps determines the size (volume) of your knot. Tip: Do not wrap the thread too tightly, or the needle won't pull through.
  4. The Anchor. Without letting go of the taut thread in your free hand, insert the needle back into the fabric. Important: Do not insert the needle into the exact same hole it came out of. Insert it into the stitch right next to it (just a tiny millimeter away). If you go into the same hole, the knot might pop right through to the inside of your toy.
  5. The Pull. Smoothly pull the needle and thread through to the inside of the toy, continuing to gently hold the forming knot with your thumb or finger until the very end.

3 Common Beginner Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

To ensure your embroidery on crocheted items always looks professional, pay attention to these details:

  • The knot is loose and messy. Cause: You let go of the tension on the thread (the one in your free hand) too early. Keep the thread slightly taut until the needle is completely pulled through to the inside.
  • The knot pulls right through the crochet fabric. Cause: The needle went into the exact same hole it came out of, or your stitches are too loose. Always make sure to catch at least one strand of your yarn when inserting the needle back in to anchor the knot.
  • The needle gets stuck and won't pull through the wraps. Cause: You pulled the thread too tightly around the needle during the wrapping step. Another reason might be your needle choice: the eye of your needle is significantly thicker than its shaft (for French knots, it's best to use needles with a uniform thickness, like milliners needles).
Once you master the French knot, you will be able to create expressive faces for your amigurumi without using plastic safety eyes. This is especially valuable when making toys for babies or creating intricate 100% handmade micro amigurumi characters!
